Tuning In To My Child's Future: A Road Map for Career Exploration and Success (Set of 3)

It Helped My Son!
Tuning In was fun to do with my child. I learned about what was going on in his mind about his future. Like most teens, he has many talents and interests, but we wanted to learn what specific careers would use those talents. By using Tuning In and completing the exercises and job shadowing experiences it recommended, we made some decisions about career areas. The program has also been a great tool for communication. The best part is that my son actually enjoyed doing the exercises, too, and grew more confident about talking to adults about their careers. I sure wish I had had something like this when I was growing up.

A great reference book for the eye care practitioner
This is one of the best reference books thus far in my personal medical library. The information provided is in a concise, clear manner that places the book on top of the list. It offers excellent pictures, and a couple of very useful chapters on automated visual fields interpretation. Books to compare to: Clinical Ophthalmology by Kanski, but this is an "improved" version! This is definitely a must buy.

William Wells and Maconaquah: White Rose of the Miamis

This is a Fantastic and Unique Historical Novel You'll Enjoy
I read this book the first time in 1985, eighteen years ago.
The book is a historical fictional novel. The people and events that took place actually occured. The author filled in some of what may have been said, although she researched the book thoroughly on location and refered to some diaries and letters
for dialogue.
The reseach took place over many years. I spent many long days at the libraries where she did her research as a teenager. We
also visited some of the locations of the events and places in the novel. The novel is a fast paced, riveting read. It is not a book that you'll want to put down. The Battle scenes are painted vividly with words, and it is an important piece of American History that you'll not want to miss out on. Frankly, I am surprised it hasn't been made into a major motion film yet... This is definitely a unique one-of-a-kind novel you must have to add to your bookcase or library, especially at a time in our own renewal of freedom and patiotism in history. It makes you appreciate what early Americans endured to make this country what it is today. Men will like this book for the intriguing historic battles, and women will be drawn into the romance and life in early America. It's a very entertaining way to spend some time. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy reading!

Beyond Suspicion
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (September, 2002)
Author: James Grippando
Average review score:

Could be better
I felt the story in this book was not 100% complete toward the end. For example, **** showed up a couple of times in the story and no mention about him/her at another time, what happened to him/her or what is being done for the crimes being committed (ongoing investigation) and so forth. Overall, the book is still good and worth a read, full of suspense toward the end. I was surprised, but it made sense when you think about the circumstances around it.

A fascinating read!
BEYOND SUSPICION is not your ordinary legal thriller. The fast paced action and interesting characters kept me reading at a feverish pace.

With a lull in my reading last month I was looking for a new author to read. I read the inside flap of the latest James Grippando book, BEYOND SUSPICION, and I was hooked. The second book in the Jack Swyteck series (THE PARDON being the first), BEYOND SUSPICION starts out with Jack defending his ex-girlfriend, Jessie Merrill, in a case worth 1.5 million dollars. He wins the case and soon after Jessie ends up dead, in Jack's own bathroom. Suddenly Jack Swyteck is the prime suspect in her death. Jack teams up with Theo Knight to attempt to uncover the details around the death of Jessie Merrill and the action kicks in.

More than just a legal thriller this book has some great story lines. Jack's wife Cindy Swyteck is having nightmares from her troubled past. She is my favorite character in the whole book. I felt the author did a wonderful job creating the tension around Cindy. She is dealing with the fact that Jack is the suspect in the death of his own ex-girlfriend, her troubled back-story with Esteban, and her past coming to her in dreams. All of which are sewn together seamlessly.

There are some other good characters that play integral parts as well. Yuri, a ruthless thug, and Katrina an insider who has her own demons to deal with, are two of my favorites.

If you're looking for a new book to read I suggest you pick up BEYOND SUSPICION. It brings a diabolical mystery, wonderful side stories, face paced action, and a twist at the end that will leave you wanting more! I recommend it along with THE PARDON.

Great Characters
When I first picked this book up, I thought, here we go again, another legal thriller by another lawyer. But I'm glad I read it. This is the first novel I've read by Mr. Grippando and I really enjoyed most of the characters in the book. Jack Swyteck reminds me of the Matthew Hope character written by Ed McBain - my favorite. Theo is the one of the best "unsavory" characters I've read in awhile.

Only flaw I found with the book was I did not like the ending - much like that of "Presumed Innocent". No matter what her background or reasoning, nothing was presented strongly enough for me to think Cindy Swyteck should get away with murder. Or that Jack should let her. I hope Grippando resolves this in another book.

Suspicion of Vengeance (Thorndike Large Print Mystery Series)

Connor/Quintana - The Dynamic Duo
This is my first read of a Barbara Parker novel. Suffice it to say that I'll be buying other Parker novels.

Gail Connor is a single mom and a civil attorney trying to make ends meet. Anthony Quintana is a high profile, well-to-do criminal defense attorney. While their interaction would lead the reader to believe anything but the fact they're in love, they certainly are. Gail is guilted by an old family friend into taking on the death penalty appeal warned by all, including Anthony, to be futile. Regardless these admonishments and excepting the fact that she's never handled a criminal matter, much less a death penalty appeal, Gail takes the case. She is representing Kenny Ray Clark who is scheduled to die in just a few short weeks. Gail is overmatched but a quick learner. To boot, she has the best teacher around in Anthony. Anthony agrees to help but only under the strict parameters of Gail's Trade Wind emotions. And, Anthony has a dark side--one that pays off.

This story has all the essential elements: a bad guy, family squabbles, misdirection, deceit, murder, sex, reality, and...well, you get the idea. Parker has created an outstanding legal thriller.

The only reason this novel didn't receive 5 stars was due to the level of legal jargon. While not overwhelming, I believe it detracted from the story somewhat.

A Gripping Legal Thriller
The sixth outing for Barbara Parker's legal duo, Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana, is the best yet in this excellent legal thriller series. Gail and Anthony take a capital appeal case with time running out and the system running against their client. With an engrossing plot, intriguing characters, and great pacing, the reader is drawn into the story of this last-ditch effort to save an innocent man (or is he) from execution. As they pursue the case, Gail and Anthony find that the only way to stop the execution is a fraught-with-danger attempt to locate the real killer. If there is any quibble with this thought-provoking study of the death penalty and the legal system, it is that fans of the series might miss its usual Miami locale and also notice that the focus here on the legal partnership of Connor-Quintana leaves little time for focusing on the deliciously torrid side of their relationship. But then, perhaps, that's for the next "Suspicion" book. If you haven't read the earlier books in the series--Suspicion of Innocence, Guilt, Deceit, Betrayal, and Malice--do so. They shouldn't be missed!

Possibly Parker's Best
Kenny Ray Clark is on Florida's death row for the 12-year-old murder of a young housewife. At the behest of his grandmother, known since childhood by Miami attorney Gail Connor, Gail reluctantly takes on his appeal case. Knowing that the case is beyond her expertise and that time is rapidly running out, Gail nonetheless dives into reinvestigating the murder and the desperate search for new evidence. Although Gail's fiance, Anthony Quintana, cautioned her against taking the case and getting involved, he, too, gradually comes to accept that Kenny Ray was wrongfully convicted. Putting themselves in harm's way to find the one witness or scrap of evidence that could get Kenny Ray a new trial, time is running out and somebody means to stop them at any cost.

The pace of this novel is page-flipping intense as you find yourself rooting for Kenny Ray every step of the way. Will Gail be able to save him from execution? You know the answer to that -- you have to read the book! And you will love it. This is to my mind THE best Barbara Parker to date.

You Only Die Twice
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (20 March, 2001)
Author: Edna Buchanan
Average review score:

Buchanan's Best
Being a southern California based mystery writer, I am constantly amazed by the output of those mystery writers based in southern Florida. They deal with a territory similar to ours in many ways, yet their works have twists that distinguish the Florida works from our California mysteries.

Edna Buchanan is among the best of the southern Florida mystery writers, and YOU ONLY DIE TWICE is among her best works. I love this book. The body of a woman washes up dead, and Britt Montero, ace crime reporter, is off on her latest adventure. The woman was supposedly murdered ten years before by her wealthy husband. That man was convicted of the crime and is awaiting execution when his supposed victim rides the tide ashore.

All of the usual atypical elements of Buchanan's works are featured here. The plot moves swiftly and veers in odd directions. The dialog is crisp, and Miami continues in its spectacular supporting role. New light is cast on Britt's romantic and family relationships. This book is perfect! Bring on the next!

REJOICE - BRITT'S BACK!
Rejoice thriller fans, Britt's back - ace crime reporter Britt Montero, that is, creation of Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter/author Edna Buchanan. The scene is, of course, Miami, where the sun always shines and crime stats. pile high.

Britt hears that the body of a once beautiful young woman has just washed up on the beach. Through fingerprints the woman is identified as Kaithlin Jordan, a member of an important department store family. Evidently, Kaithlin once held sway at the family's flagship store, calling the shots and rasing the revenue.

There are conundrums, as always - a major one being that Kaithlin has been dead for ten years. In fact, her killer is scheduled to be executed for her murder in one week. Where has the woman been for a decade, what has she been doing and who killed her - twice?

Britt needs all her resources to solves this crime that has more twists than a corkscrew.

Edna Buchanan is a pro at devising plots that reel readers in. With "You Only Die Twice" she's hooked us once again.

Fabulous Suspense From a Maven
The death warrant has been signed and R. J. Jordan is days away from execution by the State of Florida for the 10-year-old murder of his beautiful young wife, Kaithlin. Kaithlin's body was never found, but the circumstantial evidence of her demise was so overwhelming that R. J.'s protestations of innocence fell on deaf ears.

Miami crime reporter Britt Montero is on the beach when the freshly murdered body of a young woman washes ashore. Imagine the chagrin of law enforcement officials when the body is finally identified as that of ... Kaithlin Jordan. After an emergency hearing, an understandably surly R. J. Jordan is released from prison and Britt begins her investigation into where Kaithlin Jordan has been for the past ten years and why she suddenly showed up dead in Miami, to say nothing of who killed her.

The answers to these questions and more will shock you and, chillingly, this scenario could so easily actually happen. The pace of this absolutely fabulous thriller is so frantic that I finished it in one evening. Nobody writes 'em like Edna Buchanan, who's been there and done that.

Marlins!: Top of the First
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (December, 1993)
Authors: Dan Le Batard and Miami Herald
Average review score:

True Baseball! Cooperstown is Calling for LeBatard's Laptop
I've been following the Marlins for years, but reading this book was like standing in front of a tidal wave of emotions. I nearly cried when I read about Jack Armstrong singing in a St. Louis hotel bathroom. It's no wonder LeBatard has such a great relationship with the team and Dave Dombrowski...he made them what they are today through this book. Where else can I find his work? I heard him recently on a local Miami talk radio show "The Big Hour", but I'd love to see more of him.

Top of the First Steals Home!
Mr. LeBatard was obviously in a nurturing environment at the time of the book. It almost feels as if he was living with his parents when he wrote this. It is hard to believe that the Marlins are a recent expansion team. Expansion teams like the Blue Jays and Mariners have been around longer then Rumplemintz.

LeBatard Shines! I am really proud of the kid.
To write such an fascinating tome, Dan LeBatard must be a swell guy. The book really touched my soul. I am really proud of Dave Dombrowski and the Marlins staff. I hope Major League Baseball grants another expansion team so I can read Top of the First II.

The Between

Chilling and thrilling tale
It is usually pretty easy to differentiate an author's first work from their subsequent works. I read Tananarive Due's My Soul To Keep first and finished The Between months later ... They were equally superb.

The Between is a suspenseful first novel which chronicles the confusing life (death?) of Hilton, a man who, at age 8, nearly drowned but was saved by his grandmother. As an adult he suffers from horrendous nightmares and soon becomes unable to distinguish them from his waking hours. Coupled with having to protect his family from a psychotic, racist, ex-convict who is after his prosecutor wife, Hilton and the reader are tossed into a world of dreams/reality, life/death, sanity/insanity ... death/life.

This was a chilling and thrilling tale. I am usually not one who automatically sees movie potential in a book but I think this one would be a tortuous theme for the silver screen.

Suspicion of Malice
Published in Hardcover by (27 April, 2000)
Author: Barbara Parker
Average review score:

A thriller about the lifestyles of the rich and vicious.
"Suspicion of Malice" is another nicely done novel by Barbara Parker. She brings back the angst-ridden duo of Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana. These two lawyers and former lovers join forces to clear the name of Bobby Gonzalez, a male ballet dancer who is dating Anthony's daughter, Angela. They are investigating the death of Roger Cresswell, a wealthy young man whose family has made a fortune building boats. The members of Roger's family are, for the most part, incredibly dysfunctional and vicious people. They are a modern version of the Borgias, with their dark secrets and conniving ways. Parker writes sharp dialogue and brings a sizable cast of characters to life. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Gail and Anthony. Sparks fly whenever they are around. The ending is a little over the top, but overall, I recommend this thriller for its lively characterizations and for the wonderful pairing of Connor and Quintana.

Pretty good Read
SUSPICION OF MALICE (Suspense) Barbara Parker Dutton - May 2000 ISBN: 0525945423

Suspicion of Malice is the third installment of Gail Conner and Anthony Quintana--Suspicion of Deceit was first and Suspicion Betrayal was second.

The barbaric murder of Roger Cresswell took place in the shadows of an exclusive party on the Miami waterfront. The Victim is the heir to a yacht building family, and the suspects abound within this family driven by jealousy, greed, and malice. Bobby Gonzales is accused of killing Cresswell, and he is the secret lover of Angela Quintana. Angela goes to Gail Conner (her fathers ex-lover) and asks her to help clear Bobby. Angela tells Gail that Bobby has an airtight alibi that happens to be represented by Anthony Quintana. The air crackles with electricity when Anthony and Gail find themselves locked together on opposite sides of a capital case, but with an innocent mans life hanging in the balance, there is no room for venomous emotions and no margin for error, somehow they must work together to save Bobby's life. Could this case destroy whatever is left of their relationship completely or bring them closer than ever before?

Barbara Parker writes piercing dialogue and brings a great cast of characters who are very interesting to life. The plot moved swiftly to a gratifying end. Best of all was the sparks between the two protagonists that kept things animated throughout the book.

Everyone's a Suspect
When the body of Roger Cresswell, heir to the Cresswell yacht building fortune, is discovered brutally slain, everyone at the party that he had been attending immediately becomes a suspect. The one with the most to lose seems to be Judge Nate Harris who is expecting to be nominated to the Florida Supreme Court and retains Anthony Quintana as his lawyer. Ballet dancer Bobby Gonzales is also a suspect, and his girlfriend Angela (also Anthony Quintana's daughter) asks lawyer Gail Connor to represent Bobby.

This book is third in the Gail Connor/Anthony Quintana series, and in this book they've recently broken off their engagement and both are depressed and angry about the way their relationship ended. Their work on solving this case thrusts them together, and they reach an uneasy truce in their working relationship. They struggle to uncover the facts surrounding Roger Cresswell's life and death, and find that the Cresswell family had plenty of skeletons in the closet, and any one of them may have had a motive to kill Roger.

This legal thriller has plenty of plot twists and intrigue and will keep you guessing almost until the brutal end. The legal challenges as well as the emotional roller-coaster of Gail and Anthony's relationship will keep you involved until the end and looking forward to the next book in this interesting series from Barbara Parker.
